Histogram- A diagram consisting of rectangles whose area is proportional to the frequency of a variable and whose width is equal to the class interval.

Aperture- A device that controls the amount of light admitted through an opening. In photography and digital photography, aperture is the unit of measurement that defines the size of the opening in the lens that can be adjusted to control the amount of light reaching the film or digital sensor.

Shutter speed-exposure time is the length of time when the film or digital sensor inside the camera is exposed to light, also when a camera’s shutter is open when taking a photograph.

Depth of field-focus range or effective focus range, is the distance between the nearest and farthest objects in a scene that appear acceptably sharp in an image

Aperture priority-on a camera mode dial, is a setting on some cameras that allows the user to choose a specific aperture value while the camera selects a shutter speed to match, thereby ensuring proper exposure.

Shutter priority-a setting on some cameras that allows the user to choose a specific shutter speed while the camera adjusts the aperture to ensure correct exposure.

Bitmap- A representation in which each item corresponds to one or more bits of information. The information is used  to control the display on a computer screen.

Topic: After complaining about her employer, housemaid’s arm is cut off.

Title: Indian housemaid’s arm cut off by Saudi employer, woman’s sister says

Article Source: http://www.cnn.com/2015/10/09/asia/india-saudi-maid-attack/index.html

Summary: Early this morning, Saudi Arabia resident Kasthuri Munirathinam, 58, had her arm cut off by her employer. Munirathinam had complained to the police how her employer mistreats her (by beating and other harsh methods), does not pay her, and does not feed her enough. Because of this complaint, Munirathinam’s employer proceeded to cutting her arm off. The Indian government have complained to Saudi Arabia about the incident and they are looking into it.

Reaction: I think that this is completely bizarre and completely wrong. The Saudi Arabia government should definitely press charges against her employer and give Munirathinam the peace she needs. I believe that in order to be employed somewhere, Indian officials should check the place in which one of their workers will be working. It breaks my heart that many men, women, and children are abused in labor everyday. Surrounding governments should be aware of these issues beforehand.

World Impact: Not only does this affect this poor woman’s family and friends, but there are hundreds, if not thousands of other cases just like this one. There is good to come out of this though. Now, others are able to come out and share their stories as well without fear of severe consequences. Because of these other people coming out with the truth about their employers, jobs should become more secure and safe for these people. Hopefully governments will pay attention and do something about these awful mishaps.

Topic: A ‘blob’ of cold water in the Atlantic is slowing growing and slowing down ocean currents.

Title: Cold Atlantic ‘blob’ puzzles scientists

Article Source: http://www.cnn.com/2015/09/30/weather/atlantic-cold-blob/index.html

Summary: With this past summer being one of the hottest ever recorded, the ice in Greenland in beginning to melt, sending the cold freshwater into the ocean. Normally, the denser, cold saltwater sinks beneath the warmer water, but because there is so much cold freshwater, it is bringing the sinking process to a stop causing cold temperatures to reach a record low in certain areas. This Atlantic blob is the direct opposite of the Pacific blob a few years back, which warmed the Pacific mainly because of El Niño. Scientists say that the new Atlantic blob will cause us no harm.

Reaction: To be honest, this doesn’t affect me. Yes, it affects parts of the country in which I live, but not in my specific area. I hope this doesn’t cause major defects with the planet, such as the major ocean currents, but it shouldn’t cause too much harm. With Greenland’s ice melting, I hope it doesn’t cause much harm for them. Maybe since the temperatures are so low right now because of the cool ocean, ice will begin to freeze again and stop the icy waters from going into the Atlantic.

World Impact: This obviously has a huge impact on the world. Temperatures, vegetation, and everyday life is affected by this drastic climate change in the ocean cooling. The heat and cold temperatures are driven by the transfer of the currents is changing the weather in the atmosphere, helping drive our weather patterns. With about 99% of the Earth’s freshwater in Antarctica and Greenland, the melting of the ice sheets in Greenland flowing into the ocean could potentially pose a threat to humanity in that area. As of now, it shows as no trouble, and hopefully, it stays that way.

Topic: ISIS Bombing kills at least 29 while at mosque

Title: Yemen mosque bombing kills at least 29 during Eid prayers

Article Source: http://www.cnn.com/2015/09/24/middleeast/yemen-mosque-attack/index.html

Summary: After many gathered at the local mosque in Sana’a, Yemen, a bomb exploded, breaking through a cement wall and littering the prayer floor with ashes, rubble, and plaster. The streets outside were covered with rubble, and the unclaimed shoes of the victims inside. The ISIS group posted onto Twitter that they were responsible for the bombing and said it came as “part of a series of military operations to revenge Muslims against Houthis.” With Houthi rebels posing as the government in Yemen, this has been the sixth attack within 3 months. This morning, their prayers were supposed to mark the beginning of one of two of their most important holidays, Eid al-Adha.

Reaction: For me, this is kind of a scary issue. It’s scary to think that these people are not safe in the one place they are supposed to be safe, in their god’s presence. Innocent people were harmed at the hands of ISIS because they don’t agree with their beliefs. It makes me think of how lucky we are to be able to believe in whatever we want. Hopefully, we can put a stop to all of the awful happenings due to ISIS soon, because it hurts me to see all of the innocent, young lives lost on a daily basis because of them.

World Impact: Obviously this has a huge world impact. Every country within the area of ISIS will be on the lookout for these mysterious bombs. The Eid praying will probably become less and less for the people in the surrounding areas will be frightened and paranoid. For us Americans, it impacts us by showing us how we could be living our everyday lives in fear, but instead we have the security to protect us from these things. I think that everybody will be worried about if and when the next bombing will, as well as where it will happen. Hopefully this has been the last, and we should have some peace soon.

Title: Cops Find 3,500 Knives, Swords, And Blades In Florida Woman’s Home

Article Source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/nickole-dykema-3500-knives_55faa5e2e4b0fde8b0cd052e

Summary: After a neighbor watches Nickole Dykema slash her window screens and air conditioner with a large blade, she calls the police who then come to investigate. When Dykema refuses to let them inside, they force entry, revealing over 3,500 machetes, knives, and blades hanging from her walls. Photos show that some of the weapons were posed towards a shrine. Along with those, police officials found Halloween masks and props such as fake body parts. Once inside, a deputy was slashed at by Dykema with a machete, barely missing his head. After the ordeal was finished, Dykema was charged for probation violation, property damage, criminal mischief, and assault on an officer, all without bond.

Reaction: I think that it’s the right thing to charge Dykema with all of these penalties because her actions were reckless and hazardous towards others. At the time of the accident, she was on probation for shoplifting knives back in December. She shouldn’t have even had any knives, and it shocks me that she had over 3,500 and no one knew about it. Thank goodness someone saw her with knives. It’s crazy to think that these kind of people are still out and are getting away with things they aren’t supposed to.

World Impact: I wouldn’t say this necessarily impacts the world, but it definitely impacts her city and neighbors. According to her neighbor who reported her to the police, Dorothy Clagg, “She had a habit of banging on the inside of her house all the time on the walls, and screaming and hollering.” Dykema always acted weird and apparently, didn’t want anyone to enter her house… for obvious reasons. We should be more aware of these problems, and our surroundings.

Topic: Veterans may have died waiting for their health care.

Title: 307,000 veterans may have died awaiting Veterans Affair health care, report says

Article Source: http://www.cnn.com/2015/09/02/politics/va-inspector-general-report/index.html

Summary: Throughout the years that Veterans Affair (VA) has been offering health care, there have been a large number of mistakes. First of all, there are many cases of veterans who have applied for health care and have yet to receive it. Hundreds of thousands of veterans have passed due to the lack of health care. Also, there have been a number of complications with the VA’s management of health care enrollment data. These include, but are not limited to, software glitches within the records system and inconsistency in identifying veterans who have died.

Reaction: I think that some kind of action should be taken to make sure the veterans are getting the care they need, and in a reasonable amount of time. There have been over 307,000 deaths of veterans because they were not giving their care in a timely matter. To me, that shows that the company is irresponsible, and shouldn’t be able to offer their health care. It angers me that it takes VA years to get their health care in order for one person. Because of their inconveniences, there have been unnecessary deaths, and I can see it leading to more potential deaths. I believe that someone should look into this issue more, and do what is necessary to give not only the veterans, but everyone, the proper health care they need.

World Impact:  I believe that since the world has seen what VA is doing, people will began to use it less and less. Everyone will know that if they want health care in a timely matter, not to use VA because they will be waiting for a while for it. If people use VA less, they might have to shut down, which could be good or bad. It could impact the people who already have their health care from them for the worse, and it can also impact the veterans by pushing them to get better health care. These deaths have come as a shock to the world, and I think that it’s time they stop.
